Puffy Paint Watermelons!!

I love new painting ideas and have been waiting for the perfect opportunity to use homemade puffy paint.

Its so easy to make and after you put it into the microwave for a few seconds it puffs up perfectly!

It’s a great painting alternative, you squeeze the paint out of ‘squeezy’ bottles, which offers something new, other than the paintbrush. The squeeze bottles I have are pretty firm, which means that Emma has to use a little force, good for strengthening those little hands, and mostly – the important part – it’s just a lot of fun!

To make the paint you need:

1/2 cup flour

2 tsp baking powder (this is the rising agent)

2 tsp salt

Food Coloring and Water.

Method:

Mix all the dry ingredients together and give it a stir. Then add water slowly until you get a pancake like consistency (I used about 1/2 a cup).

Fill up your squeeze bottles – I used a funnel. Once you have the desired amount of paint in your bottles add food coloring. I used a long wooden skewer to stir the coloring in.

And then you are ready to begin!

Once the bottles are ready organize yourself some card – the firmer the better as thin paper bends when you cook it.

Squeeze your paint onto the card!

Once the artwork is complete, nuke it in the microwave for about 20 seconds – watch it rise – that’s the fun part! (I allowed 30 seconds for the thicker bigger pictures).

Make sure you cut card the right size to fit into your microwave, and make sure you have enough, this seems to be one of those activities where they just keep on coming…
